Moving Checklist and Handy Tips

Moving into a new home is an exciting time, but many things need to be organized. So CanComapre has put together a handy checklist to ensure your move is as easy as possible.

Book your moving company early

Ideally, you would want to book your mover two months in advance in the high season which tends to be June – September. In the off-season four weeks prior is fine. If you don’t have a lot of flexibility with your moving date booking earlier would be best to make sure you get your exact date and time required.

Decide what to toss or keep

Moving is the perfect time to declutter! There is no need to pay the movers to move broken, not used or outdated items. Use this time to decide what you can toss and what must stay. You can even make some cash with a garage sale or sell these items online and put the money toward your moving expenses.

Moving budgets and extra costs of moving

Now is a great time to sit down and put together a moving budget, so you have no surprises. Here are a few things to consider:

  • Boxes and moving supplies such as paper/bubble wrap, tape and tape dispenser and labels. It’s best to contact your mover for all these supplies. Mix matched boxes may not be sturdy and can break during the move. Using newspaper can also cause ink transfer on your items. Most movers can deliver all the necessary moving supplies right to your door.
  • Moving out or moving in cleaning costs.
  • Depending on the distance you are moving, you may have to consider boarding your pets for a night or two until you get settled in your new house.
  • Heavy item surcharge can apply to items such as pool tables, pianos etc. If you have large and bulky items, clarify that with your moving company beforehand so you don’t get caught with a nasty surcharge at the end.
  • Forgetting about memberships. If you are moving long-distance and will not be attending the same gym, club etc. Make sure you notify them as soon as possible. You may have a 30 day cancellation period or more. Any early termination payments will need to be factored into your budget.
  • Don’t forget to disconnect or transfer services such as utilities, cable and internet.
  • Ensure you contact these companies at least 30 days prior with your exact date of the move, so you are not paying for services in two places.
